- Pearls are too soft for constant wear; they are organic gemstones and much softer than other jewellery materials. Ranking only 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared to diamond, which ranks at 10. Due to this softness, they can easily be scratched and chipped.
- Chemicals can damage pearls. Daily exposure to chemicals like perfume, body lotions, fake tan, soaps, hair products, chlorine, and sweat can lead to discolouration and damage to the outer layer (nacre) of pearls, causing them to appear dull.
- Pearls shouldn't get wet. Pearls should not be worn while showering, swimming, or working out. Regular exposure to water can weaken them and lead to breakage.
Permanent jewellery is designed for everyday wear. However, pearls are too delicate for this lifestyle and should only be worn on special occasions. It is best to put them on just before you leave the house and take them off as soon as you return home.
